Collagen and hyaluronic acid

Collagen and hyaluronic acid are physiological components of connective tissue in animals and humans and are formed endogenously in the body. Collagen and hyaluronic acid are contained as natural components in certain foods of animal origin (e. g. meat) and are therefore also consumed as part of the normal  diet.

The BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment has not yet carried out a detailed systematic risk assessment of collagen or hyaluronic acid. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSAshort forEuropean Food Safety Authority) has also not yet derived any tolerable maximum intake levels for the oral intake of collagen or hyaluronic acid.

However, it should be noted that in the context of the health risk assessment of collagen as an ingredient in food supplements, the BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment has so far not expressed any health concerns regarding the additional intake of up to 5000 mgshort formilligram collagen per daily intake of a product. The BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment has also not expressed any concerns regarding the additional intake of hyaluronic acid as an ingredient of food supplements in quantities of up to 250 mgshort formilligram hyaluronic acid per day.
